Yemayá, Madre de Agua: Diasporic Spirituality, Marine Motherhood, and Black Feminism Courtney Desiree Morris

This Research Cluster reflects the extensive investigation undertaken by the artist Courtney Desiree Morris for her series Sopera de Yemaya, where she has explored the various intersections between elements such as Orisha religion, the African diaspora, the Atlantic Ocean, race, gender, and motherhood.

Across a multiplicity of formats—including references to Orisha dance and music—this library sets the ground for a contemporary rereading of the goddess Yemaya—in her racial, sexual, spiritual, and ecological dimensions—accompanied by the voices of authors such as Lydia Cabrera, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Dionne Brand, and M. Jacqui Alexander.
