The “Rhinoceral” Device: Speculation, the horn and the seas! Sahil Naik

This research cluster brings together a range of material collected as responses to the artist’s personal archives of images and documents. These materials should be read as associative texts that increase a horizontal understanding of seemingly disparate materials, in order to understand how discrepancy and nonlinearity can be used as devices to conjure speculative, enmeshing worlds. It traverses a plethora of conditions including trade, colonization, museum histories, architectural modernism and the Non-Aligned Movement specific to South Asia and the Indian Ocean. It also features the state of Goa, a recurring site and anchor in Naik’s work, alongside the Natural History Museum in New Delhi.
