What happens in Antarctica does not stay in Antarctica. This is a fact which we need to acknowledge and act upon before it’s too late. The fate of our seventh continent is in the hands of 29 decision-making nations, which meet annually at the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings along with other non-voting parties. This year, the ATCM will take place in Berlin, between May 23 and June 2. ‘Speak up for Antarctica Now’ is a call to action conceived to engage planetary citizens to give a voice to our only continent with no indigenous population and defend intergenerational justice. In light of the ever-increasing planetary disasters induced by climate change (which could be mitigated by the implementation of essential environmental policies developed on the basis of ground-breaking Antarctic research) and recent escalations in political unrest, which might redirect national interests on resource exploitation to one of the four Global Commons, action is non deferrable.

Operating both at the urban scale and in the virtual realm, the campaign creates awareness on Antarctica’s pivotal role in the global ecosystem and incites citizens to ‘Speak up for Antarctica Now.’ In Berlin, thousands of billboards, murals, and digital screens will project to Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meetings delegates, Berliners, and passers-by, facts and resolutions pertaining to the Antarctic. To exert enough pressure globally and demand accountability on the future of our seventh continent, the message needs to be amplified well beyond the German capital and go viral.
