Muddy Waters: An Archive of Aquatic Life and Colonial Histories Sonia Levy

Artist Sonia Levy and Associate Professor of Anthropology at Aarhus University, Heather Anne Swanson, talk with Markus Reymann, Director of TBA21–Academy, and María Montero Sierra, Head of Program of the Academy, about Levy and Swanson’s collaboration in Levy’s new film, Creatures of the Lines. This conversation is an exploration into the multilayered nature of this artist film, which examines not only the functions of English canals, their linear design, and their intricate connections with British imperial history and capitalism, but also the abundant aquatic life that runs through their muddy waters. Levy and Swanson’s combined interdisciplinary approaches challenge obvious assumptions and dichotomous readings of the transformations of land and water that are central parts of past and present socio-ecological damage.
